St John's Primary School

St John's Primary School
The project consisted of the construction of a new 3 storey 2 form entry primary school. Located in Watford City Centre adjacent the main shopping centre, the site was very restricted with the new building occupying the majority of the available area.
The facilities included 2 halls to the ground floor along with the on-site catering kitchen, 2 classrooms for reception children, and the main admin area/reception along with a fully fitted out hygiene room with shower, shower bed, and 3 axis hoist.
Each of the upper floors consisted of an additional 6 classrooms as well as circulations spaces, storage spaces and staff and pupil toilets. SEN rooms suitable for small group interventions, the SEN rooms were constructed with enhanced acoustics, and dedicated power and data/audio visual provision. In addition to the SEN rooms, there was also a multi sensual room within the building for quiet reflection, and as referred to earlier, a full hygiene room to the ground floor.
A particular feature of this school was the rooftop play area, the space was occupied by an all-weather pitch, fully fenced including a tensioned net above to prevent balls etc leaving the roof area.
The lack of remaining external space resulted in the addition of the rooftop play area to enhance the facilities available to the pupils.
